Highway to heaven

I love driving. I love being on the move.
Unfortunately, neither do I have a car nor a license to drive in this country. :(
Nevertheless, I love watching when others are at the wheel. :)

One stark difference that I have observed in this country is the amount of information for drivers traveling on the highway. I do not mean to play down the work of the Indian R&B here, but the sheer amount of information being conveyed to the average American driver keeps him aware of the situation at all times. There is a signboard virtually every few yards! And the colors and shapes speak as much as does the actual text.
Yes there are similar highways in India, for example the one between Ahmedabad and Baroda, which is part of the golden quadrilateral but there a lot of others that aren't. Yes, roads are being widened to accommodate the exponential rise in traffic but there is a long way to go in terms of erecting road side signs that speak to vehicle drivers. And yes, uneducated drivers are another thing that has to be kept in mind

Some notable things that signboards talk about:
- distance to the next exit
- lane to keep to head to a particular destination
- looking out for weather specific perils

Size. Some of the boards are so huge that you wont miss them even when traveling at 100mph. All such factors make driving so easy that you really dont need to know the place. Just get behind the wheel and step on the gas!

And then there is technology. GPS will ensure that you get from your location to destination by giving you directions every step of the way.

I just can't wait to get behind the wheel here, in the US of A.
